How do I work
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist, working in a small private practice in central Northampton. Integrative means that I am qualified to employ techniques from a number of different approaches, including Psychodynamic, Person-Centred Therapy and Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. Simply put, what this means for you is that this enables me to personalise your therapy to meet your own individual needs.
I will work with you to support you; by really listening to you, hearing what you have to say, and responding with warmth and empathy.
Background
I began my journey in Psychology over 20 years ago, qualifying with a Masters degree in Investigative Psychology. Using the knowledge I gained in my studies, I have worked in public service within the mental health and safeguarding arenas for many years; building and nurturing a genuine fascination for people and their individual stories, and working to help people rebuild their lives after experiencing major life trauma. I have specialised in working with victims of crime. In particular, I have significant experience of working with survivors of sexual violence and stalking. As a volunteer Counsellor for Rape Crisis, I work with these survivors for both short, and long-term therapy.
Additionally, within my 18-year career with the Police Service I developed a profound understanding of the many sources of trauma emergency services personnel encounter every day. Witnessing the psychological and emotional impact on these colleagues led me to seek out further training as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, in a bid to help them process and move on from their distress. This experience has translated into, not only a passion for, but a specialism in, supporting emergency services, medical or armed forces personnel to help them deal with the many sources of trauma they encounter throughout their working lives.
I employ this wealth of diverse experience and understanding, alongside my own personal reflections, to inform my practice as a Psychotherapist.
